The Allegan District Library is dedicated to providing modern library resources and services necessary to meet the evolving educational, recreational and informational needs of the community; encouraging reading by people of all ages; and conserving our national and local cultural heritage.
Description:
The Allegan District Library is located on Hubbard Street in downtown Allegan. The library services the city of Allegan and the townships of Allegan, Valley, Trowbridge, Cheshire and Heath. We provide access to adult volumes, both fiction and nonfiction, periodicals, videos, CDs, DVDs, CD-Roms and books on tape, as well as an on-staff reference librarian to help research any subject for any age group in-house and through inter-library loans.
The library also has a children's area and a children's librarian who provides children's programming and cooperative resources with area schools.
The Allegan Public Library has internet stations available and a fully computerized card catalog system. Through the Internet, users have access to a variety of databases meeting informational needs in areas of health, law, government, the sciences, arts, education, and entertainment.
These resources are meant to entertain, inform, and educate all library patrons, though some restrictions apply to internet use.
History:
In 1843, the village of Allegan was incorporated and $25 was allotted for a library. It's 200 volumes were kept in the township clerk's office. By 1907, after 3 1/2 years in the Masonic Temple, there were 4700 volumes and 2000 card holders. In 1913 Librarian Lenora Porter received a $10,000 Carnegie Library Commission pledge, and in 1914 our original building was opened. A new addition was constructed in 1976, and the library was computerized in 1990. By 1998, the library had 64,000 volumes, and 76,971 items were circulated. In 1999 the adult and children's areas were remodeled. Extensive new wiring was installed to accommodate more computer terminals, the paper catalog was removed, new carpeting was installed, and library hours were extended. In 2001 a dedicated genealogy computer and scanner, genealogy books and microfilmed Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps were added. In 2002 DVDs expanded our collection, and microfilm records were updated for newspapers 1856-1999 and Allegan County's 1930 census. In 2003 and 2004, CD audiobooks, cemetery records, directories and plat maps were added. In 2005, Carnegie Room renovations began; in 2006 wireless Internet connection was added.
