Agency Details:

Allegan County Emergency Management
Logo

The mission of the Allegan County Emergency Management is to protect the lives and property of citizens before a disaster strikes through preparedness, training and mitigation, and to reduce human suffering after a disaster strikes through prompt and effective coordination of the County's response and recovery efforts utilizing the expertise and resources of federal, state, local agencies and voluntary relief organizations.

Description:
The Allegan County Office of Emergency Management is responsible for identifying, planning, and preparing for emergency response and recovery for any natural, manmade, technological, radiological and terrorist incident or disaster. Operations are managed from the modern Emergency Operation Services Complex near Dumont Lake.

History:
This office has been in operation since May 1974 when it was first introduced as the Department of Civil Defense located in the Sheriff's Office. Emergency Management is mandated by Michigan Public Act 390 of 1976 which requires government units with populations of 10,000 or more to have a designated Emergency Manager and local emergency plans for public safety. Subsequently, as years passed the title was changed to Emergency Management and the department has been separated from the Sheriff's Office.

As of December 2002, the County Board of Commissioners added the responsibilities of Homeland Security to the department as the world has progressed to a different place that requires different planning and preparedness with the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 Twin Towers disaster.

The Emergency Management of Allegan County is primary funded 50% through the General Fund and 50% through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the form of an Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG).

FEMA requires the Emergency Management Programs to sign a work agreement and then report back quarterly on its accomplishments in order to receive matching funds.
