Doing Big Things with Small Boats! Through the building and use of wooden boats, the Alexandria Seaport Foundation helps young people turn their lives around and provides families, community groups and schools with meaningful educational, social and recreational experiences.

Description:
ASF's apprentice program provides workshop and classroom based studies in addition to the work oriented discipline, self confidence and workshop skills.

We use wooden boats and boat building as the central theme of the program. There are four 6- month overlapping classes of 5 apprentices each year...total of 20 per year.

At the end of the program, the goal is for each of our apprentices to have:

  • a positive attitude and ready to work,
  • a GED,
  • a driver's license and a car and
  • a career path job such as with the Carpenter's Union, where they can earn a decent living and receive two and a half years additional training.

  • History:
Formed in 1982, the Foundation began to focus on boatbuilding with at-risk youth in 1992.
