Description:
AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization for people age 50 and over.
AARP is dedicated to enhancing quality of life for all as we age. We lead positive social change and deliver value to members through information, advocacy and service.
AARP also provides a wide range of unique benefits, special products, and services for our members.
Active in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, AARP celebrates the attitude that age is just a number and life is what you make it.
Volunteering: AARP'S commitment to volunteer service first grew from the vision of our founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus. Her motto “to serve, not to be served” helped shape our volunteer efforts at the national, state, and local levels as a means of achieving a positive impact on our society.
History:
The first AARP Local Chapters were organized in 1960. By 1961, over 100 chapters were organized. Today, there are over 2,400 AARP Chapters across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Chapter size ranges from 20 to over 3,000 members. A minimal yearly fee is charged to help run the business of the chapter. Some chapters have fund-raising activities to help support local senior projects, provide scholarships for students, or donate money to worthy causes.
