Description:
Doorways empowers women and families who are abused, homeless or at-risk to live safe, secure and self-sufficient lives. We provide self-sufficiency and prevention services, and educate the larger community about domestic violence and homelessness.

Doorways is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that offers safe shelter to abused, homeless and at-risk women and families. The assistance Doorways provides helps clients develop the tools and resources essential to reclaiming self-sufficiency.

Programs and services we provide include our Family Shelter, a home and caring atmosphere providing basic life needs and individually-tailored support services that prepare clients to lead secure and self-sufficient lives; Safehouse, a home free of abuse for women and their children where goals for safety, physical and mental health needs, finances, employment, housing, childcare and long-term stability are set and achieved; HomeStart Supportive Housing Program, a new beginning for women and families ready to live independently with the help of rental subsidies and weekly home visits (up to two years); Children's Services, specifically designed to address the needs of children who have been displaced or/and victimized; Community Services, including support groups, 24-hour hotline, school and community education programs, and ongoing programs for families after they leave Doorways.

Doorways hosts a volunteer information night the first Tuesday of every month! To RSVP to attend this event, please email volunteer@doorwaysVA.org!

History:
Prior to Doorways? founding in 1978, the only shelter for battered or homeless women and their children in Arlington was a night in a motel. Doorways was developed through an interfaith collaboration and became Arlington's first emergency and Safehouse shelter. During the 1980s, two houses were purchased to establish permanent homes for our two shelters. With the generosity of donors, volunteers and staff, Doorways has provided a lifesaving continuum of care, hope and safety for thousands or women and children who experience the crises of domestic violence and/or homelessness.
