The mission of Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM) is to educate the community about HIV/AIDS, to combat the fear, prejudice, and complacency that surround the disease, and to provide direct services to meet the needs of those who are living with HIV/AIDS.

Description:
Current outreach includes HIV/AIDS Prevention and Education programs for community groups, youth groups, schools, parents and others.
NOVAM's mission is guided by a clear understanding of the needs of the local community, the particular challenges confronted by people living with HIV and AIDS, and a mandate to respond to the changing face of the epidemic. NOVAM's programs address a two-fold need for prevention of further HIV infection, as well as the critical need to care for people living with HIV and AIDS.

NOVAM is supported by federal, state, and local agencies, private foundations, diverse religious communities, and individuals. It is assisted in its mission by dedicated volunteers who embody NOVAM's philosophy of a compassionate response.

NOVAM serves all five jurisdictions in Northern Virginia.

History:
Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM), an independent, non-profit organization, has been responding to the varied dimensions of the AIDS crisis since it was founded by concerned faith communities in 1987. Originally an all-volunteer organization, NOVA was founded to provide transportation, emergency food assistance, and spiritual support utilizing a network of area churches and faith communities. As the numbers of persons affected by HIV increased and the needs became more varied, NOVAM grew to become an independent community-based organization, hired staff and expanded services to provide transportation, child care and mentoring, respite services, and prevention education.
