Mission: To provide caring, high-quality, free education and related services to at-risk children and families in their own neighborhoods in order to prepare and empower them for success in school and life.
Description:
CFNC’s comprehensive programs are designed to meet the needs of young children who are living at or below 185% of poverty and have parents who are unable to obtain assistance from other early intervention agencies. These agencies are most often in institutional settings and have few bilingual staff. CFNC has adapted its programs to meet the changing demographics of Alexandria and Arlington and is able to cast a broader net than does Head Start, which can only serve families living at or below 100% of poverty ($20,065 for a family of 4). CFNC has been innovative in creating collaborations both in Alexandria and Arlington to enhance the quality of early childhood education, promote the importance of early intervention, and provide greater access to preschool programs with the ultimate goal of helping more children enter school ready to learn.
History:
CFNC was started in 1984 by a group of mothers living in Alexandria public housing who were dismayed when 17 of their children failed kindergarten. Determined to help their children, the mothers hired Barbara Fox Mason, a talented teacher who shared the parents’ resolve to improve the circumstances for at-risk children. Together they started the preschool program with six children in one room of a housing project. Twenty-four years later, Ms. Mason oversees nationally accredited preschool programs and comprehensive family support and health services for approximately 180 3- and 4-year-old children living in some of Northern Virginia’s poorest neighborhoods.
