We advocate for the highest possible quality of life and care for persons receiving long term care services (particularly in nursing and assisted living facilities).
Description:
This is a public service focused on promoting the Residents' Bill of Rights in area long-term care facilities through education of the residents, their families and the staff. We monitor the welfare of the residents through regular visits by our volunteer ombudsmen. Staff and volunteers resolve complaints about long-term care providers through counseling, mediation and investigation. Consumers are provided information about area facilities--including our complaint track record-- to help them in choosing a facility. Ombudsmen also train long-term care staff and make educational presentations in the community.
History:
The Northern Virginia Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program was established in 1985 and used volunteer ombudsmen from the start. It is a regional service representing the State Ombudsman Office in Richmond. Federal and state law authorize the ombudsmen to respond to complaints about long-term care providers. Funding is provided primarily by the Area Agencies on Aging of the City of Alexandria and the Counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William. Additional support comes from the Virginia Department for the Aging and the federal Administration on Aging.
