The mission of Arlington RACES is to establish and maintain the leadership and organizational infrastructure necessary to provide radio communications in support of emergency management throughout the county and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Description:
RACES volunteers may be called upon when conventional communications are inadequate to meet public safety or humanitarian needs; RACES may also be activated when amateur radio resources may help facilitate response or recovery in any emergency situation.
History:
RACES is sponsored by FEMA, administered by local Emergency Management under authority 47 CFR Part 97 subpart E, reference Civil Preparedness Guide CPG-1-15. In general RACES volunteers provide communications on behalf of Local, State, and the Federal Government, during disaster response , and recovery. I am employed as an emergency planner in the Solid Waste Division of the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services. During emergencies my emergency duty assignment is on the debris management team as a field supervisor, I also assist with damage assessment, am on the dam monitoring team, and the emergenncy response planning committee and volunteer in my neighborhood with fairfax County CERT. For Arlington County I have been assisting Dave Jordan in developing plans and procedures for the new RACES program. posted by ke4sky on October 3, 2006 |
