Volunteer At Community Hospice of Virginia Community Volunteer Network Opportunities Weekday Opportunities 50+ Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on November 4, 2009

You can make a difference! Community Hospice of Virginia needs compassionate volunteers to provide support to hospice patients and their loved ones in homes and long-term care settings. Volunteers offer simple, but valuable, gifts: a warm smile, an understanding ear, and a heartfelt willingness to help. Volunteers are highly valued members of our interdisciplinary hospice teams.

Volunteers spend time directly with hospice patients and their family members and may:

  • Provide companionship and an understanding ear to patients
  • Spend a few hours each week visiting with patients so that caregivers can rest or spend time away from home
  • Read to patients
  • Help by running errands or grocery shopping
  • Help with light housekeeping tasks

Volunteers with professional skills and special talents are also welcome.

Volunteer opportunities are available in Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Fairfax City, and the City of Falls Church. Opportunities are also available in Washington, D.C. and Maryland.

Comprehensive training is required and provided by Community Hospice staff. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and must volunteer 2-3 hours per week for one year. All volunteers must pass a background check and receive an annual TB skin test, both provided free of charge by Community Hospices.

Hospice care helps enhance quality of life by addressing not only the physical but the emotional, social and spiritual issues that may arise for patients - and their families - in the final stages of their lives. Volunteers must be caring, sensitive, mature and able to support patients and families without imposing their own beliefs and should be flexible and comfortable spending time with patients with terminal illnesses.
