American Lung Association Of Maryland

Agency Details:

American Lung Association Of Maryland
Logo

The American Lung Association (ALA) is the only health organization dedicated to helping Americans breathe. We are the oldest voluntary health organization in the United States. Founded in 1904 to fight tuberculosis, our mission has expanded during the last century to fight all lung diseases through research, education and advocacy. The mission of the American Lung Association of Maryland is to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. Our vision is a Maryland free of lung disease.

Description:
The American Lung Association of Maryland is an acknowledged authority in the areas of asthma, tobacco use prevention and cessation, and air quality, both indoors and outdoors. We also fund local researchers and other medical professionals who search for better treatments, prevention and cures for lung disease.

History:
The American Lung Association of Maryland was established in 1919 as the Maryland Tuberculosis Association. Although the focus of the Association has changed since a cure for TB was found, we remain constant in working toward our mission – to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. Lung disease, including asthma, emphysema and lung cancer, is the third leading cause of death in America and affects more than 600,000 Marylanders.
