History:
Lupus Mid-Atlantic is a non-profit organization with 30 years of support to individuals with lupus. Created in Baltimore in November 1977 by Florance Hooper, a lively and determined woman whose daughter, Eleanor Hooper Hastings had been diagnosed with lupus in 1952. Eleanor died in May 1975 and soon after, Florance resolved to “do something for people with lupus and make others aware of this disease which took my daughter, but about which so little seemed to be known”
From this modest beginning, the organization has expanded its programs and services regionally and provided substantial funding for lupus research. Recent advances in this research give cause for optimism about the future of lupus patients. For the first time, promising new drugs are being entered into clinical trials and research into the cause and possible cure for lupus is advancing rapidly. Lupus Mid-Atlantic is working to inform legislators and the public about these advances and fully expects the future to bring an expansion of services and programs across its area of influence.
