The After-School Institute

The After-School Institute builds the capacity of after-school program providers so that they can deliver high quality services in a caring, supportive environment that empowers children and youth to develop civic, academic, artistic, and athletic talents and skills.

Description:
We are bringing a program called Great Science for Girls to Baltimore. GSG is an initiative of the Academy for Educational Development and the National Science Foundation, and aims to increase student interest and participation in math and science, by making science a fun, hands-on activity. Ten after-school sites were trained and have received a science curriculum to implement starting in Fall 2008. We are looking for science-related businesses to partner with each of the ten sites, and act as mentors, and run a few science-related activities with the kids over the course of the year.

History:
The After-School Institute (TASI) was established in 1999 as a citywide, capacity-building organization linked to the Safe and Sound Campaign’s After-School Strategy. As of 2007, TASI has expanded to serve Montgomery County under a contract with Montgomery County Collaboration Council. As of 2008, TASI has become an independent nonprofit organization.
