The ACLU of Maryland is looking for volunteers to help staff our biweekly civil liberties complaint line. This hotline is for people who seek legal representation, advice, referrals or information. Volunteers will be trained to provide assistance to callers and investigate significant civil rights and civil liberties violations.
The hotline will operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00-3:00 pm. Volunteers will need to be available during at least one of these days for a period of at least three months.
Volunteers should have excellent communication skills, confidence, patience, and a healthy sense of humor. They should also be comfortable working with clients from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds with a wide range of needs. Familiarity with the ACLU’s mission and current civil liberties and civil rights issues is preferred. Volunteers will be extensively trained.

Directions to the ACLU of Maryland:
1. From downtown and South Baltimore:
Get on I-83 North (either downtown or from Charles Street at Penn Station). Exit at Falls Road (Exit 8, after 28th Street). Take Falls Road through 2 lights, and make a left on Union (1 block past the 2nd light at 37th St.). Take Union downhill to the third stop sign and make a left onto Clipper Mill Road. After approximately 100 feet, make a right onto the small bridge that takes you over Jones Falls, and under the expressway, which goes into the parking lot. Turn right when you enter the parking lot and park. Our suite has its own entrance from the parking lot. From the lot, look for the large Potter’s Guild sign over the loading dock set back from the other buildings. Facing the Potter's Guild sign our office is the glass door on the left closest to the river. In the lobby ring the call button near the elevator so we can send it down (it can’t be called without a key card).
2. From West Baltimore:
Take Druid Park Drive East until it dead ends and turn right. Go one block and make a left on Union. Cross the bridge (which goes under I-83) and make a right at the stop sign onto Clipper Mill Road. Follow directions from Clipper Mill Road in 1 above.
3. From southern Maryland
Take I 95 North to Baltimore. Exit on I-395/Martin Luther King Blvd. (Exit . 52), and follow signs for 395, not Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. I-395 becomes Howard Street at Conway. Continue on Howard past Camden Yards Stadium to Pratt St. Right on Pratt, and continue past the Power Plant entertainment complex (with the large Hard Rock Cafe, ESPN Zone, and Barnes & Noble signs) to President St. Left On President, which turns into I-83 North. Follow directions in 1 above.
Alternate directions. Take MD 295/Baltimore-Washington Parkway into Baltimore. The Parkway becomes Russell Street. Follow Russell past Raven’s Stadium, then past Camden Yards Stadium. Make a right on Pratt St., and continue past the Power Plant entertainment complex (with the large Hard Rock Cafe, ESPN Zone, and Barnes & Noble signs) to President St. Left On President, which turns into I-83 North. Follow directions in 1 above.
4. From northern Maryland and North Baltimore:
Take I-83 South to Coldspring Lane East (Exit 9). Stay left when the ramp splits to go East. Follow Coldspring Lane to second light at Falls Road (look for gas stations at the intersection). Right on Falls Road, through light at 41st St. Make a right onto Union (if you get to the light at 37th Street, you’ve gone 1 block too far; there is a sign for Meadow Mill Athletic Club on the building on the Southwest corner of the intersection). Follow directions from Union in 1 above.
5. From western Maryland:
Take I-70 East to I-695 South (exit 91). I-695 South to I-95 North (exit 11). Follow directions from I-95 North in 3 above. |
