Family Service, Inc. seeks to strengthen individuals and families by building skills for successful home, work and community life. The agency is especially committed to reaching underserved and at risk individuals who face stresses of poverty, family violence, aging and cultural isolation.
Description:
Family Service has implemented a broad range of prevention and treatment programs that are evidence-based and result in self-sufficiency and improved economic and health outcomes for its clients. Over 20 programs are currently offered in the areas of child welfare, parent education, youth development, employee assistance, mental health and substance abuse treatment, and suicide prevention. These services reach over 2,000 individuals from Greater Lawrence annually. Family Service is accredited by the Council on Accreditation, Inc., which holds the organization to high standards of performance in all areas. Recent achievements include the completion of a $1 million Capital Campaign, and the award of three multi-year federal grants for implementation of programs in the areas of care to pregnant and parenting teens, HIV/AIDS prevention, and reducing children’s exposure to toxins. The agency is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and Executive Director who oversee a staff of 35. A Community Advisory Board provides additional input from city residents. History:
Family Service was first established in 1854 as the Lawrence City Mission. Since that time, the agency has grown and changed to meet the changing needs of the community we serve. In 2004, Family Service celebrated its 150th anniversary.
