Agency Details:
Project Bread - The Walk for Hunger
Project Bread - The Walk for Hunger is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to alleviating, preventing and ending hunger in Massachusetts. The Walk for Hunger is the nation's largest annual one-day fund-raiser to alleviate local hunger. The Walk for Hunger is a 20-mile walk through Boston, Brookline, Newton, Watertown, and Cambridge. The walk is always held the first Sunday in May.
History:
Project Bread started as the Walk for Hunger in 1969 by Patrick Hughes, a priest at the Paulist Center, a Roman Catholic community located near the Boston Common. That first year, $26,000 was raised to fund two emergency food programs and a Massachusetts tradition was born. When Pat Hughes left the Paulist Center in 1971, a group of volunteers carried on his vision of social justice for hungry people through the Walk for Hunger. During the past 30 years, the Walk for Hunger has raised nearly $40 million to help hungry children, families and individuals in Massachusetts. Today, in addition to the money raised from the Walk for Hunger, Project Bread has a variety of different programs and services to help hungry people. The agencies' goals are to make food accessible to people who would not otherwise have adequate food; to increase public awareness and understanding of hunger;to effect public policies to prevent hunger in our midst;and to empower people by offering positive avenues of action, including the Walk for Hunger.
