Tutoring Plus of Cambridge

Tutoring Plus of Cambridge aims to support and encourage the academic, personal and social growth of youth in Cambridge through the use of volunteers and community partners. Today, Tutoring Plus runs 5 tutoring programs for children in Cambridge in grades 4 through 12. We have three High School and three Middle School sites throughout Cambridge. In addition to regular Middle and High School tutoring, we run three Math and Science Enrichment programs in the spring. Volunteers are matched with one student based on personality and subject preferences, who they meet with once a week from 6-7pm on the same night at one of our sites for at least a semester and hopefully one school year. Programs are offered free of charge to the families we serve.

Description:
Today, Tutoring Plus serves 140 children through its 5 programs. All of our programs are offered in the evenings (5:30-7pm for students, 6-7pm for volunteers), which provides convenient volunteer opportunities for people who work during the day. Volunteers generally tutor for one hour, one evening per week, and work with the same student each week. History:
Tutoring Plus was established in 1964 by a group of mothers who sought additional help for their children in school. The mothers approached a student group at MIT, who served as Tutoring Plus' first volunteer tutors and mentors. Over the past 40 years, Tutoring Plus has expanded and changed its programs to reflect the needs of the children it serves, but its main goal of providing academic support to children in need remains as true today as it did in 1964.
