Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D)
RFB&D is a nationwide nonprofit serving people of all ages who cannot read standard print because of a visual, perceptual or other physical disability. Our mission is to promote their educational and professional success by converting educational texts and other books into recorded, computerized and other accessible formats.
Description:
Today, RFB&D is a national organization with 28 recording studios across the U.S. The Boston Unit operates a modern eight-booth digital audio recording studio in North Cambridge, convenient by car or public transportation. Our dedicated corps of Boston-area residents donate more than 18,000 hours a year to produce recorded text for students locally and worldwide. Volunteers perform virtually all tasks in this process, including preparing text for recording, reading, directing recording sessions, editing, and quality control. All audio books produced in Boston are added to RFB&D's central library in Princeton, NJ, where they are available to students worldwide who are members of the organization. To make our studio accessible to as many volunteers as possible, we record weekdays from 9 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Our orientations take place Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. (call for dates). Or, if Wednesday is bad for you, we are happy to schedule an individual orientation for you at the time of any of our recording sessions (just call for times). If you love reading or working in a recording studio, or perhaps both, this is the volunteer opportunity for you!
History:
RFB&D was founded in 1948 by Anne T. Macdonald, who believed that "education is a right, not a privilege" and that blind students should have the opportunity to get a college education. For over 50 years, volunteer readers have been keeping her dream alive on behalf of all print-disabled students and professionals.
