The Support Committee for Battered Women is committed to the safety, support, and empowerment of those who experience domestic and dating violence. Recognizing domestic violence as a societal issue that impacts individuals and families of all backgrounds, the Support Committee offers services to work toward the reduction and prevention of domestic violence. While respecting dignity and confidentiality, as well as the need for privacy, the Support Committee provides crisis intervention, temporary shelter, support, education, resources, and advocacy. The Support Committee strives to work collaboratively with community resources and institutions, providing leadershipp and education to create a unified community response to domestic violence.
Description:
The Support Committee for Battered Women is a private, non-profit organization established to serve the needs of victims of the crime of domestic violence. Based in Waltham, it provides direct services and community education to 27 communities in the West Suburban/Metro-West region of Boston, and serves over 2,700 families each year.
History:
The agency opened in 1981 as a local hotline for victims of domestic violence. Over the years it has grown to include the following programs, serving 27 communities in the West Suburban / Metro-West region of Boston: 24-hour hotline emergency shelter support groups, legal advocacy, community-based advocacy programs teen dating violence prevention, and community outreach and education.
