BAM aims to enhance New England's cultural life by producing concerts and fully staged productions of operatic and vocal music, emphasizing the lesser-known repertory of major classical composers. BAM also aims to maintain a repertory company of highly skilled New England based performers, to nurture young artists by affording them the opportunity to work within a professional environment, and to introduce opera to wider and more diverse audiences, fostering a love of opera in children and young adults.

Description:
BAM is an opera producing company that now presents a fully-staged season at the Emerson Majestic Theater.

History:
During the early 19th century, Boston Academy of Music was one of the most important musical organizations in Boston, presenting important choral and orchestral works.
In 1980, baritone Richard Conrad refounded Boston Academy of Music as a professional vocal repertory company dedicated to presenting important and rarely-heard works of the world's greatest composers. Over twenty seasons BAM has presented the world, American and Boston premieres of works by Bellini, Donizetti, Gershwin, Haydn, Liszt, Puccini, Strauss, Rossini, Sullivan, Verdi, and Wagner.
In 1982 Boston Academy began its series of fully staged productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operas including the American premiere of Arthur Sullivan's grand opera Ivanhoe. Now a Thanksgiving tradition at the Emerson Majestic Theatre, audiences have grown to over 3,500. In 1991 the company opened its opera-in-concert series at Jordan Hall to wide public acclaim and international press coverage, most recently with outstanding reviews of Verdi's La Forza del Destino, Donizetti's Maria Stuarda and Anna Bolena, and Strauss' Arabella. In 1998 Boston Academy moved its offices into the Charlestown Navy Yard, where it presents cultural and educational events in conjunction with Boston National Historical Park. In 1999, Boston Academy took up permanent residence at the Emerson Majestic Theatre for its full season of staged operas. Boston Academy also presents summer special events such as the all-day opera marathon.
Over twenty years, Boston Academy of Music has contributed to the richness of Boston's musical life, maintaining a high standard of musicianship and establishing an ensemble of New England's finest singers and instrumentalists, along with internationally known singers and conductors.
