Newton Community Service Center (NCSC) is a nonprofit, multi-service organization that strengthens individual, family, and community life through a network of support services and educational programs. We promote social, emotional and physical wellness and continuity of care for all ages. The agency serves a racially, ethnically and culturally diverse population from Newton, Waltham and surrounding communities.
Description:
Newton Community Service Center(NCSC) is a private nonprofit multi-service agency providing support and guidance programs for infants through seniors in Newton, Needham, Waltham, Watertown and surrounding areas. Programs include: Early Education and Child Care (on site and at home family providers); After School Care; Vacation Camps and Summer Day Camp; Teen Outreach Programs, Leadership Academy & Mentoring, Young Parents Program; Child Assault Prevention Program (CAP); Parent Child Home Program, Service Opportunities After 55; and Adult Day Health Care. Each program promotes self-reliance, self-esteem and self-determination.
History:
Newton Community Service Center was founded in 1907 by a group of West Newton citizens who rented a house at 89 Elm Street and organized programs to provide day care for children of domestic workers. NCSC has grown enormously since its quiet beginning, currently serving almost 6,000 individuals each year. Today our social services are more critical than ever: NCSC has become an integral part of the community and a safety net for thousands of families Indeed, more people, from diverse economic and social backgrounds, seek care or support for a loved one through early childhood education, teen and young adult mentoring, adult day health care or family guidance. While demand for such services is increasing, state and federal funds are shrinking. With a deep commitment to building upon the agency’s history of caring and comprehensive community service, NCSC’s staff and Board teamed up in the summer of 2005 to design a strategic plan and modernize operations to reinforce NCSC’s ability to continue offering innovative services that fill community needs of today and tomorrow. Under the leadership of Executive Director Bill Garr, a talented staff and a committed Board of Directors, NCSC is well positioned for its next 100 years!
