Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program

Agency Details:

Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program
Logo

Our mission is to assure safe access to quality healthcare for all homeless individuals and families in the greater Boston area.

Description:
We are doctors, nurses, dentists, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, case managers, and researchers working together in more than 80 sites in the greater Boston area. We have clinics in homeless shelters and hospitals as well as outreach teams that seek out homeless on the streets, under bridges, in alleys, at the race track, in soup kitchens, in motels and domestic violence safe houses.

One of our programs is an inpatient, respite facility for homeless individuals in need of medical care. At the Barbara McInnis House, we provide medical/nursing care to those whose medical condition is too complex for the shelter system, but who are not in need of hospital level care. We provide 24-hour medical care as well as transportation to medical appointments, psychiatric, dental and case management services, as well as a variety of other services for homeless adults.

History:
In 1985 our program was founded as one of 19 Healthcare for the Homeless Projects. We started with a handful of clinicians and have since grown to an organization of more than 260 staff members and dozens of volunteers. Since 1993, we have operated a nationally recognized respite care facility. The Barbara McInnis House, which served 90 patients, has become a national model for other cities seeking to offer this kind of service.
