Codman Square NDC

Our mission is to stabilize and revitalize the Codman Square neighborhood of Dorchester. We do this through initiatives that include: Housing Development, Economic Development and Community Building.

Description:
We have developed almost 1,000 units of affordable housing. We also provide affordable rental and homeownership opportunities for low/moderate income people. We assist small businesses with business planning and access to capital. We work with residents to organize/take leadership around block-level concerns they have ranging from vacant lot development to youth services to trash/street cleanliness. We are now working on transit oriented development along the Fairmount Commuter Rail Line, in partnership with three sister CDCs. We have a pipeline of about 200 units of transit oriented housing (primarily rental), that will break ground over the next two years. We also are working with the MBTA and Mass DOT to bring 4 new stops into our community on the Fairmount Line. As a result of our work, we were just named as a U. S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development/Dept of Environmental Protection/Federal Transit Authority Sustainable Communities Pilot Program (via the Fairmount Coalition/Collaborative). We need volunteers to serve on our Board and Committees to help us further this Smart Growth, Sustainable Communities work.

History:
We started in 1981 as a result of a grass roots, resident-led organizing effort to address and stop blight in the neighborhood. Arson for profit was rampant in our neighborhood at that time. The residents responded by developing the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corp to rehabilitate abandoned buildings in the community and revitalize the economic infrastructure within the community.
