Zoo New England's mission is to inspire humankind to respect, appreciate and enjoy our natural world. We are dedicated to caring for and sharing animals and their habitats, participating in local and global conservation and education programs, and providing a fun and wondrous experience that fosters an ethic of care and motivates responsible action towards the environment.
Description:
Zoo New England's core activities are its naturalistic exhibits, educational programs and conservation efforts. Recreating habitats from around the world that house a diverse animal collection of local and global significance, ZNE provides educational opportunities for visitors to learn about complex relationships in biological communities and the need for healthy wildlife habitats. Volunteers, fulfilling many different roles throughout the organization, are important and valued members of the Zoo New England team.
History:
Zoo New England is the private, not-for-profit that operates the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston, MA and Stone Zoo in Stoneham, MA. The Stone Zoo, founded in 1905, and the Franklin Park Zoo, founded in 1911, were managed by state/municipal agencies until 1991 at which time the not-for-profit Commonwealth Zoological Corporation was formed which, since 1997, has been d/b/a Zoo New England.
