Develop Assessment Tool For Refugees in Vocational ESOL Recommended agencies

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on January 28, 2009

One of the current objectives in the Refugee Services ESOL/VELT class is to better serve those clients who cannot learn vocational English at the same pace as other students.

We know that these are some of the many reasons why this happens:
lack of literacy in their country of origin
cultural issues
gender issues
special needs
trauma
emotional imbalances for any number of reasons
stress over financial and family problems
old age
medical/hearing

We also see that when these same clients are able to get a job, it is harder for them to keep their jobs and/or increase their salary or position.

These clients come from Africa, Haiti, Asia, Russia and occasionally South America. They represent several faiths, educational and vocational backgrounds and need to learn enough English to get and keep a job that pays a living wage as soon as possible.

We would like the assistance of graduate students interested in working with us to develop an assessment tool which would serve to guide us more effectively in developing a plan of action.
We need to identify the specific academic challenges these clients face and then determine how to best teach them the vocational English they'll need.
A tool to assess the success of our product(s) should also be created and overall stats should be managed surrounding this process.

Graduate Level Student.

Thank you for your interest and support.
