ARE YOU A LEGO ARCHITECT? COME PLAY WITH HOMELESS CHILDREN! Did you know: at least 1 out of every 24 Massachusetts children is homeless at any given time? An even higher proportion of Massachusetts children experience homelessness over the course of a year, for a total of at least 82,000 homeless children and youth in the Bay State. Horizons for Homeless Children is seeking 150 volunteers to interact and play with over 500 children living in 55 family, teen parent, and domestic violence shelters in Greater Boston. A commitment of 2 hours a week for 6 months is required. We offer daytime and evening shifts, so there is likely to be one that fits your schedule. It is a rewarding and fun experience for everyone involved. The next training session will be on December 1st and 2nd from 6-9pm (upcoming trainings also include: January 30, 2010; March 30/31, 2010; and June 5, 2010). Please call 617-445-1480 for more information, or visit www.horizonsforhomelesschildren.org.
Being a Playspace Activity Leader (PAL) with Horizons for Homeless Children is a fantastic volunteer commitment that benefits not only the children you are playing with, but also their families. You will see as you start volunteering that your visit to the shelter is truly the high point of these children's day. The short info is: •We're looking for a six month commitment of once a week for about 2 hours. •You need to be at least 16 years old. •We work with over 50 family homeless shelters, and we'll do our best to match you up with a shelter that is relatively convenient to you. We have times available in the morning, afternoon, and early evenings. The hours generally are 8am-8pm Mondays through Thursdays and 8am-6pm on Fridays. Unfortunately we have no weekend shifts. •You will have other volunteers working with you so it's never just you alone with the kids. And you will have the support of the shelter staff at all times. •The first step is to fill out an application; you can find it online at http://www.horizonsforhomelesschildren.org/How_To_Help_Volunteer_Application.asp . You will then be contacted by the Volunteer Recruitment and Training Manager. •You'll also need to attend a training session: our next one is December 1 and 2 2009 in the Greater Boston Region (upcoming trainings also include: January 30, 2010; March 30/31, 2010; and June 5, 2010). There you will learn more about our organization, family homelessness, what is expected of you as a PAL, and some early childhood development. •Please bring a photo copy of a government issued ID (driver's license/passport/ID card) to fill out your CORI application. •You must have fun!

Overall Experience

Currently Tutor College Students English as a Second Language at my college.
 |
I am not part of an agency. I am a parent, college student, and English tutor part-time as employment and once in a while on my own time.
I thoroughly enjoy tutoring English. I cherish the fact that I have something to offer people. I can get them through their first stepping stone of achieving academic success. What I have gained is a knowledge of so many different cultures and diverse lifestyles. posted by GenXer1967 on November 6, 2005 |
