The Peace Drum Project is an after-school teen leadership and intergenerational arts project that brings together Boston teens and senior citizens to learn about each other through the arts and oral history. During the 30 week project, at-risk teens from Boston's Public high schools explore a variety of visual and performing arts, visit artist's studios and museums, and work with the elders to help them tell their stories. The stories are then converted to photos and images that identify each elder's personal Peace Drum. Through their shared experiences in the arts, both teens and elders develop stronger ties to each other and to the larger community. Interns will gain valuable hands-on experience while assisting program staff artists with the following activities: • planning and presenting workshop sessions and leadership trainings for teens as they learn critical thinking and problem-solving skills through performing and visual arts (e.g. drama & role playing, visual arts, drum making, etc.); • planning and coordination of field trips (e.g. museum visits, community outreach, visits to artist's studios, etc.) • checking inventory and purchasing program supplies and materials, and preparation of materials for weekly sessions with teens and/or senior citizens; • promotional activities related to the project including: mailings; developing press releases; outreach to community and media contacts; support for project fundraising events, exhibits, etc. • evaluation and documentation of project activities, and • developing and leading several of your own activities (E.g. journal-writing, performing or visual arts, or oral history activities) with teen participants.
Undergrad or graduate students, or adult volunteers are welcome to apply. Candidates must be able to work at least 6-8 hours per week Sept.through June. Fluency in Spanish is an asset, but not required. A project orientation will be provided, and guidance from the project staff will be ongoing. E-mail resume to Susan Porter at cai@tribal-rhythms.org, or call 617-524-6378. Check www.tribal-rhythms.org under Peace Drum Project for more information.
