Calling All Retirees: Help Us Help Elders Recommended agencies

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on September 16, 2009

Are you retired and interested in giving back to your community? Do you want to make life better for an isolated elder who wants to remain independent? Then you should volunteer with MATCH-UP!

We at MATCH-UP firmly believe that "Your neighbor's independence depends on you". That is why since 1984 we have been committed to providing volunteer support to isolated elders and adults with disabilities living in the Boston and Brookline communities. Over the years, we have grown into a thriving non-profit organization in the heart of Boston's downtown providing friendly visiting, one-time assists, medical escorts, exercise and education programs, and pet visitation to elders and adults with disabilities in the Greater Boston area.

Right now,we have a great demand for our services but a limited amount of volunteers willing to help out during the day. That is why we need your help. If you are retired and interested in giving back to your community during the daytime hours, we want to hear from you! We have a variety of volunteer opportunities and offer flexible hours of service - we want your experience with MATCH-UP to be rewarding and will work to accommodate your schedule.

Our volunteer opportunities include:

Friendly Visiting: Friendly Visitors develop one-on-one relationships with older or disabled adults. They visit once a week for about an hour and make an eight month commitment to visiting. Over time both people grow and learn from each other and often become great friends.

Medical Escorts: Medical Escorts accompany older and disabled adults to and from important medical appointments. This is a flexible opportunity and no car is needed.

One-time Assists: One Time Assistants help with elders' occasional needs such as gift-shopping, packing for a move, or visiting a sick relative.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities please let us know.

We can be reached at (617) 482-1510 or at lwaller@matchelder.org.
