GIRLS’ PROGRAM SEEKS MENTORS AND TUTORS!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A YOUNG WOMAN'S LIFE

The Creative Action Project (CAP) is a comprehensive afterschool program for teen girls in Cambridge, with a focus on leadership development, creative expression, and positive social change. CAP girls meet twice a week afterschool and participate in a variety of activities. Girls are also eligible to be matched with Mentors and Tutors, who are adult women volunteers. If you would like to support young women in your community, please consider volunteering as a Mentor or Tutor with the Creative Action Project!

ABOUT THE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM: Girls explore and celebrate the contributions of women and girls throughout the world and throughout history; gain the confidence, skills and experience necessary to become strong leaders in their communities; and develop into involved citizens who play an active role in bringing about positive social change. CAP activities include creative art and writing projects; exploring women's art and literature from around the world; learning about the history of women's activism and women's movements worldwide; community service activities; field trips; guest speakers; and more.

ABOUT THE GIRLS OF CAP: CAP participants are a diverse group of 9th-12th grade girls from Cambridge’s public high school. Students represent a broad range of backgrounds including Haitian, Nigerian, South Asian, Ethiopian, Latin American, Native American, African-American, Vietnamese and others. Girls gain valuable intercultural skills as they work with peers from this wide variety of ethnic and cultural experiences.

INFORMATION FOR VOLUNTEERS
We have opportunities for both Mentors and Tutors available. Please note that because girls going through the transition from middle school to high school are especially eager for adult women role models, we are seeking female volunteers only for this program. Women of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

The next Volunteer Training will be in FALL 2009. Please apply today and we will contact you with more information! Apply online at http://www.cambridgecommunity.org/cap_volunteer_application.htm

ROLE OF A TUTOR: Tutors meet with students once a week to provide help with one or more academic subjects, and/or test preparation.

TUTOR TIME/SCHEDULE COMMITMENT: Tutors must be able to commit to 1½ hours each week (Mon and/or Wed, approx 5:30-7:00). Tutors should be available starting in Fall/Winter 2009 through the end of the school year in June’10 (or at minimum, thru Dec’09).
TUTOR TRAINING: Tutors will attend 2-4 sessions of an interactive training covering issues such as adolescent development, tutoring tips, and more.

ROLE OF A MENTOR: Mentors serve as advisors, role models, career and educational guides, and trusted friends…every relationship is a little bit different.

MENTOR TIME/SCHEDULE COMMITMENT: Mentors will meet with their mentees on weekday afternoons or evenings and/or on weekends. Schedules are flexible and meetings occur every week or two. We also host group Mentor-Mentee events bout once a month, with activities ranging from Bowling & Pizza to Arts & Crafts to Community Service Projects. Mentors are expected to make at least a one-year commitment to the program.

MENTOR TRAINING: All mentors are expected to attend a comprehensive five-session training, which includes topics such as adolescent development, communication skills, and cross-cultural issues. Training sessions are interactive and dynamic, and usually take place in the early evening hours.
