Become a mentor and join a network of committed women who are helping formerly homeless and at-risk mothers achieve economic independence. Mentors are vital to supporting and encouraging Scholars. Each Scholar is matched with a Mentor – ideally in their field of study. Qualifications:
- Willingness to share your experiences as a woman in your field, as a college graduate, or as a parent
- Commitment to solving the issue of family homelessness
Responsibilities:
- Offer career, educational and life skills advice to Scholars based on your expertise
- Assist Scholars with the challenges of balancing work, school and family
- Help a Scholar find her voice, become assertive and advocate for herself
- Keep Scholars motivated and focused during trying or busy times
- Help Scholars build their professional network
Scholars' areas of study cover the spectrum of possibilities: criminal justice, nursing, medical technologies, legal, human services, education, business and accounting, communications and management, hospitality and tourism, linguistics, computer science, architecture, journalism.
A volunteer is asked to complete a written application, meet personally with the mentor coordinator. The volunteer is expected to attend a one day training program. Training is provided several times a year. Volunteers for this position should have some knowledge/experience of higher education or professional training as an adult. Mentors meet with scholars in-person once or twice per month. We ask for a one year commitment. Sensitivity to the struggles of raising a family, making ends meet, managing time, keeping house in addition to attending school is important to this service. Mentors represent a wide diversity of women willing to give of their time and input in order to support a Scholars growth and foster success. Some are single working women who may be recent graduates themselves; others are seasoned executives who have raised children while working and developing a career; still more may be experienced volunteers or retirees. The single most important qualification to be a successful mentor is the willingness and enthusiasm to give of your time and talent in order to help another woman achieve what you already have: economic and personal stability in their lives.
