Long Term Care Ombudsman Recommended agencies

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on January 5, 2009

If you have two hours a week, you can make a difference in the lives of area nursing home residents as an Ombudsman.

Minuteman Ombudsmen are trained and certified by the Commonwealth to impartially investigate and resolve complaints and problems of residents in long term care facilities. Ombudsmen enhance the quality of life of nursing and rest home residents by serving as a link between residents, staff, families and communities in Acton, Arlington, Concord, Bedford, Boxborough, Burlington, Lexington, Littleton, Maynard, Stow, Wilmington, Winchester and Woburn.

Ombudsmen visit residents regularly to receive and resolve concerns. They are also a source of information about community resources and resident's legal rights. Volunteers 18+ are welcomed, and will be rewarded for their advocacy and encouragement with love and appreciation by frail seniors.

Ombudsmen attend three days of training presented by the staff of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, and attend a monthly staff meeting. They must have a car for reliable transportation, and will be reimbursed for mileage. Ombudsmen visit local nursing homes once weekly, and become familiar with services offered by service agencies and State and Federal rules/regulations. In addition to compassion and a willingness to listen, they need good communication and problem solving skills, good judgment and the ability to maintain confidentiality. They also should be comfortable working independently.
