Literacy Volunteers of America
Board Members Needed!

WHO:
Established in 1972, the mission of Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts (LVM) is to promote literacy skills that empower adults to realize their goals. LVM trains volunteer tutors to provide free, confidential and individualized tutoring to adults in basic reading and writing, and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). LVM is the premier volunteer literacy organization in the state, managing nearly 1000 tutor/student pairs across Massachusetts.

WHAT:

LVM has embarked on an aggressive strategy to respond to an expanding student waiting list and to establish two new affiliate programs in Massachusetts communities. As a result, LVM is currently recruiting candidates to complement the existing Board.

The LVM Board of Directors is the organization's legal and governing entity. Working in partnership with the Executive Director, the Board's governance supports the Executive Director's management of LVM. The Board's primary activity is to ensure the continuity, stability and lifeblood of the organization by acquiring financial, human and physical resources needed to strengthen and support the organization's operations. The Board utilizes its community and professional contacts to promote LVM.

LVM is seeking individuals who share a passion for adult literacy and have the time, commitment and energy to actively participate as a Board member.

REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates to the Board must be: 1. committed to LVM's mission and sensitive to adult students and volunteers; 2. enthusiastic about and willing to participate in the development and growth of LVM; 3. able to work effectively as part of a team with strong interpersonal skills; 4. able to provide the skill, experience or expertise needed by LVM; 5. able and willing to meet the responsibilities outlined in the full LVM Board Member Job Description and LVM Board Service Commitment Pledge.
