New England Aquarium Needs Volunteers

RSS XML FeedBackground Active Apr 1, 1999 to Apr 28, 1999

Summer volunteers are needed particularly on weekends, but also on weekdays, and Wednesday and Thursday evenings throughout the summer. The minimum commitment for volunteers is 100 hours. Most volunteers accomplish this commitment through 8 hours per week during the summer. The schedule is extremely flexible, and the volunteer chooses his/her own schedule based on Aquarium needs.

Volunteers will participate in 4 training sessions designed to

  1. acquaint them with basic marine biology & conservation issues
  2. train them on public speaking and interacting with the public and
  3. train them on the philosophy of informal science education. In addition to 4 training sessions, volunteers are paired with a mentor volunteer who helps the new volunteer get to know the Aquarium and the position.

After "basic training" volunteers may choose to specialize in a particular area of interest. Current specialties include: birds (including penguins, shorebirds & puffins), marine mammals, coastal environments, freshwater environments, conservation and more. Specialists present talks to the public, create and give animal interview presentations, develop, design & deliver interactive activities --all based on the volunteer's own interests. All training is provided!

    About the Aquarium
The New England Aquarium serves approximately 1.2 million visitors annually. The Aquarium's visitor pool draws from Boston and local communities, as well as school and camp groups, international visitors and summer tourists.

The Environmental Education volunteer program exists to ensure that visitors to the Aquarium have meaningful interaction not just with fish, but people who care about the environment as well! Environmental Education volunteers work with Aquarium exhibits, and stress conservation messages through interactive activities.
