MATCH School needs volunteers

RSS XML FeedBackground Active Jan 1, 2000 to Jan 28, 2000

Beginning in January, the MATCH School is offering a literacy initiative to help prep our incoming 9th graders for high school, via a Saturday Academy which runs January 8th until May. We need volunteers for either mornings (10am - 1pm) or afternoons (1pm - 4pm). We also have some weekday afternoon slots.

In the mornings, students will read and discuss contemporary books in small groups -- one, for example, is starting with David Halberstam's "Michael Jordan and the World He Created"; another is starting with an essay collection called "Adios, Barbie."

In the afternoons, students are working in even smaller teams to create video, radio, web, and photo projects on topics that stem from their readings.

The first session is at the Harvard University Science Center on January 8th, and there's an orientation for volunteers a few days prior.

For more info, please contact Holly (volunteer@matchschool.org) at 266-9669.

It's a VERY rewarding way to connect with inner-city disadvantaged teenagers.
