| Literacy Volunteers has begun a English as a Second Language program in answerto the numerous phone calls we receive each month from recent immigrantsinterested in improving their English skills. Here in Massachusetts adultscan wait up to 3 years on waiting lists before entering an ESL class. We havebegun our ESL program in conjunction with St. Francis House Day Center. Thestudents may be homeless, living in a shelter or be low income. Our studentsare all adults and hail from a variety of nations, predominantly in Asia orLatin America. Tutors will complete 18 hours of training. They will learn techniques toteach speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to the adult learners.Tutors do not need any knowledge of a foreign language! They will be matchedwith one student and meet with that student an average of 2 hours a week,usually at the Boston Public Library. Tutors will plan lessons using avariety of materials based on the student's needs and interests. Thesematerials could include workbooks, menus, train schedules, the newspaper, jobapplications, etc. Tutors do not need any previous teaching experience, allthat's required is a high school diploma or GED, patience and a good sense ofhumor!
