ESL Tutor Orientation on March 29

RSS XML FeedBackground Active Mar 1, 1999 to Mar 28, 1999

Literacy Volunteers has begun a English as a Second Language program in answer to the numerous phone calls we receive each month from recent immigrants interested in improving their English skills. Here in Massachusetts adults can wait up to 3 years on waiting lists before entering an ESL class. We have begun our ESL program in conjunction with St. Francis House Day Center. The students may be homeless, living in a shelter or be low income. Our students are all adults and hail from a variety of nations, predominantly in Asia or Latin America.

Tutors will complete 18 hours of training. They will learn techniques to teach speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to the adult learners. Tutors do not need any knowledge of a foreign language! They will be matched with one student and meet with that student an average of 2 hours a week, usually at the Boston Public Library. Tutors will plan lessons using a variety of materials based on the student's needs and interests. These materials could include workbooks, menus, train schedules, the newspaper, job applications, etc. Tutors do not need any previous teaching experience, all that's required is a high school diploma or GED, patience and a good sense of humor!

Interested volunteers can call Kathy Henderson at 367-1313 between 9-5.

Orientation is March 29th from 6 - 8 p.m. at 15 Court Square Room 540 Boston.
