One With One tutor/mentors are paired with adult newcomers to the United States who are enrolled in the Entrance: Office Work training program. Each tutor/mentor is partnered with a student to spend three hours a week speaking English together to accelerate the student's English acquisition. Together they develop a mutually rewarding relationship while focusing on the goal of improving the student's English mastery. The 3 hour-long meetings take place in the evening or on the weekend and provide the student with an opportunity to improve his/her English through casual conversation as well as focused lessons tailored to the student's particular needs. For example, a student may request vocabulary building or need to practice particular phonetic sounds that s/he has difficulty pronouncing. Other lessons may include reviewing classwork, practicing speaking clearly on the telephone, and practicing taking accurate telephone messages. What Volunteers Will Do- Tutors and students both commit to meet together three hours each week for nine months.
- The partnerships start with a weekend workshop for the tutors which focuses on training in lesson planning and goal setting, cross cultural communication, and issues of prejudice and stereotyping. The next workshop will be held March 5th, 6th, and 7th.
- Each tutor speaks weekly with the volunteer coordinator to discuss what lessons were covered during the most recent meeting, receive suggestions from the staff of classwork to review, and to address any support needs.
- Tutors participate in meetings held approximately every six weeks for additional training and feedback.
- Tutors fax or mail a partnership meeting summary each week.
