Volunteerism Up In Down Economy
RSS XML FeedBackground Active Aug 7, 2009 to Dec 7, 2009

As the economy worsens, the number of Americans trying to make a difference is going sky-high.

According to the Associated Press, nearly 62 million Americans volunteered for something in 2008, the largest total in the past four years.

The numbers are up locally too. According to Business Volunteers Unlimited based in Cleveland, the number of northeast Ohioans looking for community service increased 200% in the first six months of the year.

It's a two-way street. With budgets tightening, organizations are relying on volunteers more than ever.

The top volunteer activity was fundraising, with collecting and distributing food second, general labor third and tutoring and teaching fourth.

If you want to volunteer, but aren't sure where to start, contact Business Volunteers Unlimited for advice.
