Our mission is to prevent vision loss and preserve sight among the citizens of Maryland.
Description:
Provider of preschool screening, adult vision and glaucoma screening, mobile eye care for the homeless and consumer eye health and safety information. All programs are aimed at preventing loss of sight. UW funds provide eye examinations and glasses to the homeless and indigent through the mobile vision van. Poor vision is a major barrier to the homeless attending classes, driving, finding and keeping a job.
History:
Begun in 1909 with efforts to eradicate "baby sore-eyes" (Ophthalmia Neonatorum), our organization has continued to grow for almost a century with programs aimed at preventing unnecessary causes of blindness. 50% of all blindness is preventable with early detection and preventative measures. The society is the only non-profit agency in the state that has consistently provided vision screening for three years old children. Over the years, the Society has also promoted important legislation in Maryland to preserve sight. Our current programs include Preschool Vision Screening, Adult Vision and Glaucoma Screening, Eye Care for the Homeless, Eat Right for Healthy Sight and Eye Safety.
