RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network)
The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network is the nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization. RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline and National Sexual Assault Online Hotline and carries out programs to prevent sexual assault, help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.
Description:
Among its programs, RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE. This nationwide partnership of more than 1,100 local rape crisis centers provides victims of sexual assault with free, confidential services, 24/7. The hotline helps 140,000 sexual assault victims a year and has helped more than one million callers since its inception in 1994. RAINN recently expanded its hotline services to include the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline, the nation’s first secure web-based hotline providing anonymous, live help, 24/7 through an interface as intuitive as instant messaging.
In addition, RAINN uses its extensive entertainment industry and community-based relationships to put critical information into the hands of young women and men at concerts, on campus and in communities. Through these many close partnerships, RAINN educates more than 120 million Americans each year about sexual assault. RAINN also publicizes the hotline's free, confidential services; educates the public about sexual assault; and leads national efforts to improve services to victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.
History:
RAINN was founded in 1994 in response to a need for a national collaboration of sexual assault service providers. RAINN created the first nationally-based hotline that referred individuals affected by sexual violence to local, community-based resources. The National Hotline has received over 1 million calls and RAINN's services have expanded to include the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline, prevention and education campaigns, media outreach and public policy initiatives.
