The Cancer Support Foundation, Inc. (CSFI), a non-profit 501(c)(3)organization, provides quality-of-life solutions for cancer survivors and their caregivers. It was founded by two cancer survivors in 2005. Our mission is to make sure that everyone undergoing cancer treatment in the State of Maryland is able to maintain stability in all areas of their lives. Most people realize that patients who lack health insurance face tremendous financial problems. However, even those with health insurance can quickly exhaust their financial resources, leading to the possibility of losing their cars, their homes, and even their jobs. One cancer survivor put it this way: “I beat the disease, but I lost my life.” CFSI goes beyond other community resources to help those in need. We begin by talking with each client to gain an understanding of their needs and then tailor plans accordingly. We identify and refer to State and national program services and we supplement as needed. The types of services we provide, as funds allow, include: • Referral to existing programs • Eviction prevention • Car payments • Payment (or co-payments) for medicine and medical supplies • Transportation • Utilities • Food and clothes • Emotional support This free service is funded by grants, donations, special events, and fundraisers.

We have been chosen to be part of the Legacy Leadership Institute through the University of Maryland. The group of experienced business people has been charged with revamping our marketing plan for sustainable financial viability. Recently Cindy Carter as president of CSFI was the guest speaker for the Washington Conference of Women’s Ministry Society of AME with an audience of more than 400 religious and community leaders. This resulted in expanded awareness of CSFI’s role and resources and led to additional speaking invitations for large religious organizations. This has enabled us to make sure that our services are known in the religious community. Radio interviews along with newspaper and magazine articles in such publications as “The Baltimore Sun” and “Focus on Women” have helped us reach those in need. This ongoing education process helps ensure that those undergoing cancer treatment know where to turn for help. Regular appearances at health fairs, many times partnering with American Cancer Society, help round out our community outreach. Through our ongoing efforts we have helped more than 450 clients get through their treatment in safe environments. We are starting our fourth year with two programs that will help create awareness throughout the State. Our “Lifeline to Recovery” program will be launched this summer. When fully implemented, each cancer patient in the State will receive a “Goody Bag” filled with helpful items and information. Our statewide “Wigs of Hope” drive will enable cancer survivors and others to help new cancer patients by providing donated wigs to those in need. This program will also heighten the awareness in the community at large and provide a way for people across Maryland to demonstrate support in a simple and tangible way.
