Food Studies Institute

The Food Studies Institute promotes the long-term health and education of children through curriculum development, multi-media publishing, teacher training, and consulting on the implementation of a unique curriculum. The food-based curriculum integrates academic disciplines with experiential learning about food, nutrition, culture and the arts. The non-profit, tax exempt, corporation also assists schools to incorporate low fat, high fiber, nutritious foods into school meals and to involve parents and guardians in their children’s food education.

Description:
The Food Studies Institute (FSI) works with schools around the country to educate children about healthy foods of the world. Over the past six years FSI has done work in Baltimore City schools. The Stadium School is a progressive public middle school that has a trained food educator, Catherine Dixon, teaching the award-winning Food is Elementary (FIE) curriculum to all of the eighth grade students. Ms. Dixon is in need of responsible volunteers from 8 - 12:55 each day to assist with the food and cooking lessons.

History:
FSI has been a national non profit since 1999. FSI works on bringing food literacy to at risk students so they will be able to make healthy choices about what they eat and therefore improve their lives. The work of FSI is research-based and documents the effect healthy food has on health, behavior, and academic performance.
