The Silver Spring Interfaith Housing Coalition (SSIHC) is a nonprofit (501c3) organization of 24 local congregations and other interested people working together to provide housing opportunities in our neighborhoods for low-income families and individuals, especially people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Our motto, "ending homelessness one family at a time" is something we take very much to heart. To that end we are the only transitional housing program that provides what we call wrap around services. Those services include but are not limited to professional case management and volunteer mentoring support to help residents build stronger and more stable futures for themselves and their children. We walk with our families every step of the way to achieve their goals leading them to self-sufficiency and good family relationships, but we can't do that without the support of volunteers. The walks we take with our families enrich our own lives immeasurably and provide concrete ways to build the kind of neighborhoods and communities we all deserve to live in. Consider joining us!

Description:
SSIHC is made up of 24 local congregations of many faiths who support the work of the organization with Board members, funds, volunteers and other resources. Currently SSIHC has 15 units of housing. Residents come to our program from shelters or other temporary living arrangements. Families can stay between 2-5 years in our housing. There is one home in the program for 6 single men that provides permanent supportive housing.

History:
SSIHC was started in 1991 by a group of civic-minded community members in Silver Spring out of another group who was addressing the needs of the homeless community. SSIHC was run solely by volunteers until 1998 when a professional case manager was hired. The organization has been slowly expanding over the years with the additions of both single family homes and apartment units for low-income families and individuals.
