SHIP is a service of the Baltimore County Department of Aging in their overall mission to serve the senior population of Baltimore County.

Description:
SHIP volunteers are trained to provide seniors with confidential health insurance counseling. They help beneficiaries evaluate current Medicare Health Plans and Medigap Insurance Policies, as well as the new Medicare Prescription Program. Volunteers receive 18 hours of training. Volunteers are requested to provide 2 hours a week counseling for the Baltimore County Department of Aging SHIP program and assist with the research and enrollment at the Senior Centers, in November and December, for the Medicare Prescription Drug Program. SHIP volunteers provide individual counseling to Medicare beneficiaries to help them understand basic Medicare information; eligibility and enrollment, preventive services, beneficiary rights, and financial assistance. They assist in completing the necessary paperwork, understanding their Medicare Summary Notices, and identifying and reporting insurance fraud. They can also assist a person in understanding and evaluating Long Term Care Insurance. SHIP is a national Program funded through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
