The purpose of the Be A S.T.A.R! Literacy Program of Union Missionary Baptist Church is to increase the academic achievement of youth in the greater Lansing area through increased literacy development.
Description:
The Be A S.T.A.R! Literacy Program provides one-on-one reading tutoring to children in kindergarten, first, second and third grades. Tutoring takes place at the Union Missionary Baptist Church in the summer on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There is no charge for a tutoring session. Sessions are led by trained Be A S.T.A.R! Literacy volunteer tutors.
History:
The Be A S.T.A.R! Literacy Program of Union Missionary Baptist Church began in the spring of 2005. Since its inception, approximately 25 children are tutored annually. Union Missionary Baptist Church was the first African American Baptist Church in the city of Lansing. It was established in 1909.
