The purpose of the Be A S.T.A.R! Literacy Program of Union Missionary Baptist Church is to increase the academic achievement of youth in the greater Lansing area through increased literacy development.
Description:
The Be A S.T.A.R! Literacy Program of Union Missionary Baptist Church provides one-on-one reading tutoring to children in Kindergarten to Grade Three. Summer Session tutoring takes place at Union Missionary Baptist Church on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. There is no charge for the service. We provide training to the the volunteer tutors. Experience as a tutor or teacher is helpful, but not required.
History:
Be A S.T.A.R! began offering reading tutoring in Spring 2005. Since then, Be A S.T.A.R! has provided free, one-on-one tutoring to about 25 children each school year and during the summer. Union Missionary Baptist Church was the first African American Baptist Church in the city of Lansing. It was established in 1909.
