Description:
Our geographic focus is on Ingham, Clinton, and Eaton counties. Our programs focus on River Protection, Green Transportation, Land Use, and Sustainable Practices. The goal of the River Protection program is to create swimmable, fishable, and drinkable waterways. Within the River Protection program are the Volunteer Stream Monitoring program and the Low Impact Development program. The goal of the Green Transportation program is to create and promote low environmental footprint travel options. Within the Green Transportation program is the Smart Commute program, which offers commuting and transportation options that have low negative impacts on the environment. Mid-MEAC also helps to head up the efforts of Walk and Bike Lansing!, a program intended to make Lansing a walk and bike friendly city. The goal of the Land Use program is to enhance urban cores and preserve open space for nature. Under this program Mid-MEAC runs a First Friday Land Use Lunch guest speaker series focused on local land use issues. The goal of the Sustainable Practices program is to promote practices for business, government, education, and individuals that preserve environmental, social, and economic well-being for future generations. Mid-MEAC assists with the Lansing Go Green! initiative, Local First! initiative, and promotes best practices over electronic newsletters and on the website.
History:
Mid-MEAC formed on Earth Day in 1993 by a group of residents who wanted to create an environmental action and advocacy group for the Mid-Michigan area. Some of Mid-MEAC's past achievements include: river clean-ups, monthly environmental newsletters, created and distributed "Riparian Handbook" to homeowners along the Red Cedar River, helped coordinate Adopt-A-River, water quality testing, storm drain labeling, conducted a trail use study, and more.
