The Mission of the RFDC is to serve as a primary supplier of donated food and related products to a network of non-profit agencies who provide food assistance to the poor and vulnerable, which provides opportunities to develop and nurture volunteerism that benefits the community.
Description:
We are the food bank for agencies that feed the hungry in seven counties of mid-Michigan. We accept salvage and donated food and non-food products from a variety of sources in Michigan and throughout the United States. Volunteers inspect, sort and sanitize all donations before they are made available to our member agencies.
History:
In 1983, at the request of the Capital Area United Way, the Mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross initiated a food banking operation called Project Aid for Food. The purpose was to assist the Greater Lansing Food Alliance and other non-profit agencies feeding the hungry in acquiring low-cost or no-cost food. In 1991, the name Project Aid for Food became the American Red Cross Regional Food Distribution Center.
