Last updated on December 14, 2007

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Description:
The Salvation Army, Capital Area Command, oversees two corps (churches), Citadel and Lansing South, as well as administrative and social service offices, an Outreach Ministry and Beginnings Child Care. Under social services we provide utility assistance, rent assistance, housing placement, a food pantry, a personal needs pantry, a community kitchen Monday and Friday from 12:00-1:00 p.m., Wednesday produce distribution in Lansing and Thursday in St. Johns, bus tokens, and prescription assistance. The services above are contingent upon funding and inventory. Throughout the year we have special programs, including Coats for Kids, Christmas intake, food vouchers and/or toys, and Easter food baskets.

History:
General William Booth founded The Salvation Army after he saw ragged wretches sleeping under London's bridges through bitter cold nights and commanded: "Do something." When other churches chose to ignore the poor, General Booth preached that man can understand the power of God when he is hungry and cold. The Army came to Lansing in 1884. They persevered to serve the Lord and give special meaning to "one soul saved." After its founding the Lansing Corps underwent a series of moves. In 1906 it established headquarters at 117 East Allegan where it remained until 1955, when their operations were shifted to 902 S. Cedar St. In May 1970 the Lansing Corps moved its citadel to the current location at 525 N. Pennsylvania Ave. In 1997, the administrative and social service programs became the responsibility of the Capital Area Command and the church programs became the responsibility of the local corps officer (pastor).
