EPO programs improve the health and well being of our community’s babies by empowering parents with key knowledge, skills, and resources needed for a safe and nurturing family environment.
Description:
The Expectant Parents Organization provides prenatal and parenting classes for expectant parents in the mid-Michigan area. Working in cooperation with area physicians and mid-wives, the organization serves approximately 4,400 people each year. Classes are held in many locations throughout greater Lansing and are taught by Registered Nurses. The following programs are available:
- 4-Week Evening Prenatal Combo - Includes the three primary courses that make up the traditional prenatal and parenting series and is recommended for first time parents. The Combo includes Preparing for Birth, Labor & Delivery, and Newborn Care and Feeding. Each of the three courses can also be taken separately.
- 3-Week Saturday Prenatal Combo - Includes Preparing for Birth, Labor & Delivery, and Newborn Care and Feeding.
- One-Day Saturday Prenatal Seminar – This program is a condensed version of the Prenatal Combo.
- eLearning Prenatal Class - An alternative for those who cannot attend a conventional prenatal class due to bedrest, scheduling conflicts or time constraints. The program is an interactive, web-based program that includes animated illustrations and videos.
- Parents Expecting Multiples Class – This class is for parents expecting a multiple birth. Parents will learn about the last months of pregnancy, labor and delivery, and life at home with twins or triplets.
- Breastfeeding Class - Parents will learn about breastfeeding to give their baby the very best start. Topics include getting started right, avoiding problems, pumping and storage of breast milk, and combining breastfeeding with your active life style.
- Refresher Series – The Labor & Delivery Classes(part two of the Prenatal Combo) provide a nice Refresher Course for repeat parents.
- Sibling Class – Parent-child activities help children learn what newborns are like and about their own changing role as a big brother or sister. Class includes a mini hospital tour and hands-on activities. For children ages 3-8 and their parents.
- Teen Prenatal Series - Prenatal Series for teen mothers, ages 19 and under, and their support person. Learn about pregnancy, labor and delivery, breathing and relaxation techniques, cesarean birth, infant care and feeding, paternity issues, and community resources.
- Private Classes – For mothers with special circumstances, we offer a private class. It will be arranged to accommodate your situation and schedule, and can include bedside teaching in the hospital or in your home.
