Housing Services' mission is to assist the people of Eaton County with low or moderate incomes, including those with disabilities, to obtain safe and affordable housing. We shall also provide an environment that encourages and supports the attainment of economic self-sufficiency.
Description:
We have several programs all centered around housing issues. The agency provides case management for the following: homeless persons and families, prevention of homelessness services, a down-payment assistance program, Michigan prisoner re-entry transitional housing, rental subsidy for the disabled, and supportive housing for the mentally ill homeless. The agency has certified Home LINKS staff. All of these services provide some follow up or supportive services.
History:
The agency incorporated in 1995 from a grassroots group of concerned residents. It received its first HUD grant to help the homeless in 1997. Following that grant, it has received a renewal of this funds ever since. In addition, the agency sought follow up services funding from HUD and received these in 2000. In 2001 the agency added the down payment assistance along with the rental subsidy program, the only one of its kind in the State of Michigan and only one of 40 in the nation. In 2003, the agency partnered with a for-profit developer to build a 48 unit senior housing apartment complex with 36 units having rental assistance. In 2004, the agency acted as the City of Charlotte's 3rd party administrator for their rental rehabilitation program which created 5 new rental units in the loft areas of down town and rehabilitated 7 other units near down town. In 2004, the agency moved into its own building purchased with a "community building" loan from Rural Development, a low interest loan for non-profits to build capacity and serve the public. In 2006, two staff members became certified to offer the MSHDA Home LINKS program for financial literacy and home ownership classes. In addition, the director partnered with MSU Extension and Eaton Federal Savings Bank to offer "Money Smart," a financial literacy program.
Prisoner re-entry transitional housing was added in 2007. The agency continues to seek offer needed services to the residents of Eaton County.
