Adult Handicap Program

The mission of the Adult Handicap Program is to improve the quality of the lives of adults with developmental disabilities residing in our area by providing regular opportunities for socialization, fellowship, recreation, entertainment, and enrichment in a caring atmosphere, that is geared to their special needs.

Description:
The Program is offered for 23 weeks from September through May on Tuesday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. Activities include bingo, table games, square dancing,
pot-luck dinners and other entertainment. The program meets primarily in Charlotte at the Eaton Intermediate School on Packard Hwy. and occasionally at the Charlotte American Legion. From the middle of May through August, 12-13 weeks of bowling are offered at Char-Lanes (on Lansing Rd.) in Charlotte.

History:
The program has offered its services since 1982. The program was designed as a social/recreational outlet to foster social contact and peer interaction and to provide chances for social development for the "differently-abled" persons that it serves. Due to their special needs and limitations, most adults who have disabilities have little, if any, access to the social and recreational options that many take for granted. The once-a-week sessions that the program offers helps to fill that void.
On Tuesday evenings these special people meet in Charlotte where they have the opportunity to socialize and to participate in a variety of activities. The individuals that participate in the program have a wide range of abilities/disabilities, a range of ages from 18 to the 60's and live in various communities in the Eaton County Area. Some live in foster care homes, others live with their families, and a few live independently. They all share a need for friendship, a smile, and a helping hand.
